How to Choose Carpets

Installing new carpet is not something that most homeowners do often. Where changing up a paint color can be a cheap and quick way to breathe some fresh air into a room, the same cannot be said for carpet. Installing carpet can be costly, labor intensive, and disruptive to your daily life. That is why choosing the right carpet from the start is the best way to set yourself up for success.

Where To Not Put Carpet

Before you get started choosing carpet, you need to decide where to put it. Or better yet, where not to put it. Carpet is a great flooring option for almost any part of the home. But carpet does not do well in areas with high humidity or exposure to moisture. That is why it is best to omit carpeting your kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms.

Carpet Material

Understanding what materials carpet can be made in will better equip you to make an informed decision. This is because the material you choose for your carpets will greatly influence how comfortable they are, how durable they are, and how moisture and stain resistant they are. Here is a quick breakdown of different carpet materials.

Wool- Wool is a natural material that is very durable, making it a great choice for high traffic areas. It is stain resistant and an eco-friendly option since it is a renewable resource.

Olefin- Olefin is a strong synthetic fiber. It is coarse and durable. It is a popular choice for entryways and children’s rooms.

Polyester- Polyester is another stain resistant material since it is not very absorbent. It is a soft material that makes walking on it very pleasant. Which makes it great for bedrooms.

Nylon- Another option for high traffic areas is nylon. It is very tough and durable and resistant to wear and stains.

Carpet Construction

The next factor that should go into your decision making is the way the carpet is constructed. Generally, carpet is finished in one of two ways: loop pile and cut pile. Loop pile is just as it sounds. The fabric is woven into hundreds of small loops. Loop pile is a highly durable style of construction, but the downside is that it can be quite rough. Loop pile carpets often serve offices and workspaces best.

The other construction style you can choose from is cut pile. With these styles, the material is formed into a loop as well only then it is cut open at the top. The end result is a softer and more comfortable carpet. They are not as resilient as loop pile carpets, but the tradeoff is comfort.

Taking material and make into consideration and deciding what will suit your needs best will help you choose a carpet that will offer you the most enjoyment and function.
