Reasons Your Carpet is Buckling
A common complaint that we deal with here at Nip & Tuck, is that of carpet buckling. You have probably encountered this issue at some point, either in your own home or someone else’s. These ripples and waves are more than just unsightly, they promise to trip you up at some point. But why do they seemingly appear out of nowhere, what causes them in the first place, and what can be done about them?
Cause #1: One reason your carpet may buckle could be the result of heavy furniture. Specifically, they can be the result of dragging heavy furniture across the room. This is because as the piece is dragged, it tugs excessively and causes the carpet to stretch. To prevent this, make sure to fully lift the piece of furniture from the ground as you are moving it.
Cause #2: Humidity is another major contributing factor to buckling. Inherently humid environments and areas where there are large fluctuations between summer humidity and winter dryness are particularly at risk of carpet buckling. You can combat this by running the air conditioning during the summer months, as well as taking advantage of dehumidifiers.
Cause #3: Sometimes just manufacturing defects can be at the root of the issue, like in the case of delamination. Every carpet has backing that keeps it in one piece. Latex adhesive is used to seal layers of backing together. When that adhesive is broken down, it can allow the sections of carpet to move and wrinkle.
Cause #4: Improper installation is yet another reason you may see ripples in your carpet. Firstly, the carpet should be given time to acclimate to the environment it will be in. This is because it can change slightly when in different conditions, such as when it goes from a cold warehouse to a heated home. Secondly, the installer should be using a power stretcher to pull the carpet taught. If the carpet is not fitted snugly enough, the excess fabric will relax into waves or wrinkles.
