Tips for Removing Your Carpet
Things can add up quickly when making renovations to your home. That is why many homeowners will choose to do certain tasks on their own when they can. One common project that many choose to tackle on their own is removing their old carpet. Removing old carpet on your own can save you several hundreds of dollars and if you want some expert tips on how you can accomplish this, keep reading.
Start with a Corner
The easiest way to begin is to start at one corner of the room. Typically, you can pry up the edge without any tools, but if it is not budging with sheer force, use a utility knife to cut a small piece of carpet away. This should provide you the leverage you need to get it started. Be extra mindful of the tack strip that is used in installation. These strips are extremely sharp.
Work with Strips
Once you have got the ball rolling, you will want to begin creating manageable sections of carpet using your utility knife. Typically, an average sized living room or basement can be divided well into three sections. Once you have divided the carpet, roll each section up neatly and secure with duct tape. This way, you can easily carry the pieces to the curb without them unraveling.
Dealing with Padding
Once you have removed all the carpet, next you will have to remove the padding. Normally this is easy to do just by pulling. If the padding is glued to the subfloor, you will need to scrape it up. Roll the padding into workable pieces just like the carpet for easy removal.
Removing Tack strips
If you are planning on installing more carpet and your tack strips are in good condition, you do not need to bother with this step. If not, you will need to remove the tack strips. To do so you will need a pry bar and a hammer. You should be wearing gloves for all these steps, but especially for this one. Use the pry bar to wedge underneath the tack strip between the nails. Then use the hammer to tap the pry bar until you feel the strip is freed from the subfloor. Repeat the process as many times as necessary.
And there you have it! Removing old carpet on your own only takes a little bit of time and labor. Sometimes people replace their carpet because they feel like it is beyond saving.
