Tips to Installing Carpet

Many of us love to do things ourselves to be able to save money where we can. Its smart to do, but that means we don’t always really know what we are doing especially if we are doing the project for the first time. Carpet installation is one of those things that you can do yourself but if not done properly, the results will be unfavorable leaving you with ripples in the middle of the room or shrinkage on sides. Everything has tricks to help you get the job done right and we want to share with you the tricks we have with carpet installation.

Keep in mind that as you plan for this carpet installation project you’re going to need to more than your usual house tools. In addition to your normal house hold tools you’ll need to make sure that you rent a seam iron, power stretcher, and knee kicker. These are essential to making sure that your carpet will be installed properly without any repercussions. Stretching the carpet is a must when installing it. Any good carpet installer knows this. If that has already made you a little nervous it’s best to let a professional do it.

Make sure to take note of your carpet pile direction when seaming two pieces. Carpet pile direction is in short, the direction that the carpet fibers run. You can tell which direction they run when looking at it in bright lighting. The carpet pile direction can change the color that the carpet appears to be. If you look at it from one direction of the room and then go across and look at it from the other end of the room, you’ll notice a slight change in color. This is purely because of the direction of the carpet fibers. To make sure that your carpet doesn’t look funny when you’re done installing it, take the extra time to make sure that all your carpet fibers are going the same way before seaming it together.

When placing your carpet tack strips around the room, it’s important that you don’t place them right up against the wall. There is a sweet spot that you’re going to want to make sure to hit when putting them down. If you put it too close, then you won’t be able to get your carpet underneath the wall. If you put it too far away, then you won’t have anything holding your carpet in place and more than likely it will pull out. You’ll want to look at the thickness of the carpet and then place it a hair less than that away from the wall. This is going to be your sweet spot to make sure your carpet will stay in place.
